BACKGROUND:
Yemen is a fragile state and one of the poorest countries in the Middle East; with more than half of the population living below the poverty line – where majority are female-headed households and/or families with a large number of female members. For prolonged period, Yemen has suffered from severe food crisis, repeated internal violent conflicts resulting in disruption of services, lack of security and a large number of IDPs as well as political/economic turmoil.
In 2014, Yemen was ranked as the one of the most food-insecure country globally. 37% of Yemeni are living under poverty (less than USD2 per day), 41% of the population cannot meet their needs for food, together with a national general acute malnutrition (GAM) rate of 12.7%. For details, please refer to 2015 Yemen Humanitarian Needs Overview (OCHA) .
With the above external context in mind, Oxfam GB's work in Yemen is along a spectrum that includes humanitarian intervention, longer-term resilience/development work, as well as local and national advocacy for the vulnerable groups. To maximise benefits for poor and marginalised people in Yemen, we seek to integrate these components into a 'one programme approach', with women’s rights and justice for women being at the heart of Oxfam’s work in Yemen.
